On the Record: Understanding Today’s Media Landscape, Navigating Public Scrutiny, Building Leadership Profile and Municipal Trust

Municipal leadership has never been more visible.

Council meetings are livestreamed. Community debates unfold on social media. Local issues such as housing development, bike lanes, short-term rentals, chicken coops, and NIMBY disputes can quickly become headlines and dominate public conversation.

On the Record is a practical three-hour workshop designed for new and returning elected officials. More than media training, this session helps participants build the confidence and communication skills needed to speak effectively and credibly whenever they are on the record, whether in Council chambers, public meetings, media interviews, conferences, community events, or online.

Participants learn how to communicate under pressure, navigate public scrutiny, build trust, strengthen their leadership profile, and protect municipal reputation in an environment where every interaction has the potential to shape public perception.

Our perspective is grounded in journalism, municipal leadership, public sector communications, and emergency management. Having worked both inside municipalities and in the public arena, we understand how issues become headlines, how public trust is built, and how communication can either fuel or calm controversy.

The workshop is practical, conversational, and rooted in real municipal experience. Participants leave with tools they can immediately apply to difficult conversations, contentious public issues, media interviews, stakeholder discussions, and everyday interactions with residents.

When everything is on the record, credibility, confidence, and trust matter.
